The Campaign against the Dwarves was the last, if minor, conflict of the Dragon War. Having vanquished the Dragon Riders, slain the Elvenking, and overthrown King Angrenost, the last remaining threat to Galbatorix was the dwarven realm. He had already destroyed much of Dûrgrimst Az Sweldn rak Anhûin, so he later moved against the remainder of the dwarves as he and the Forsworn fought to expand the Empire.

After some skirmishes, the Dwarves gave up their cities above ground and retreated underground. Sealing themselves off from the outside world, they could do little but wait as the Forsworn constantly flew through the Beor Mountains and killed all they encountered.
