Cantos was a town believed to be sheltering several members of the Varden. Galbatorix, determined to destroy the rebels, ordered Murtagh to lead his soldiers into the town and kill all the residents, even those not involved with the Varden. Murtagh, at last seeing Galbatorix's madness, escaped with his servant Tornac before he had to carry out the orders. Despite this, Cantos was still razed and burnt to the ground.
