I was just reading Brisingr last night and read something when Eragon and Saphira had just left Farthen Dur.
"As the throbbing subsided, he gazed across the lake. Between the curtains of swirling mist, he spotted the ruins of a sprawling castle built upon a bare stone spur on one mountain. Thick ropes of ivy strangled the crumbling walls, but aside from that, the structure appeared lifeless. Eragon shivered. The abandoned building seemed glommy, omnious, as if it were the decaying carcass of some foul beast. " (Brisingr- Pg 579) I think it could be a possible place for the VoS.
I believe that what it was refering to was Mani's cave as was described to be in the beor mountains. Perhaps Eragon could go there and see/talk to those who have died. It could count as Brom coming back as an unexpected way if he could see Brom and talk to him there. In my opinion he could go there and talk to Eragon I, riders before the forsworn took over, and maybe the grey folk and learn what to do.
