The Ghastgar was a rather unusual Dwarvish contest, in which two Dwarves rode at each other on Feldûnost from a distance of at least 170 feet (not specified in the book). At a distance of thirty feet, one dwarf threw a javelin, whilst the other attempted to block it with a buckler or catch it.
This was typically performed during a celebratory event, most often at a wedding or at an ever rarer event, like a Coronation. [1]
Role in the Books[]
Eragon was able to witness to this event when he was staying at Bregan Hold with Orik. One of the dwarves, who was participating in this contest, was a coward and rode away. He was duly defeated and brought shame upon his family.
