Legacy of a Rider is the 37th chapter of Eragon. It takes the point of view of Eragon.

Summary[]

In this chapter, Saphira finds a cave for Eragon, Murtagh, and Brom to hide in. While Eragon and Murtagh sleep, the deeply severely injured Brom begins to spasm. Eragon and Murtagh awake and rush to his aid. When Brom stops seizing, he demands wine to be poured on his palm. As Eragon pours the wine onto Brom's musty palm, he is amazed to see a gedwëy ignasia - Brom was a Rider. Brom reveals to Eragon that he was once a Rider himself, and his dragon was also named Saphira. Brom gives Eragon his blessing, as well as seven words in the Ancient Language that he says must only be used in the time of greatest need, and slowly passes away.

Eragon demands a proper burial, so Saphira and Murtagh accompany him to the top of the cliff. Eragon mends a tomb out of the sandstone, crafting it with magic. He lays Brom inside, and scratches some final words of memory onto the rough sandstone.

Saphira reveals to Eragon that Brom had already told her that he was a Rider, and also reveals that Brom had entrusted her with many secrets that she would reveal when she felt to be the right time.

Allusion[]

The scene in which Brom reveals the seven Ancient Language words to Eragon bears great similarity to a scene in Sir Thomas Malory's Morte d' Arthur. In the book, a character named Bron that was thought to be a crazy hermit revealed to Galahad at the time of his death that he was actually a great magician. He then teachers him a prayer composed of the names of God (not revealed to the reader) to be used only under the most dire of circumstances.
