List of spells

Spells were words or phrases in the Ancient Language that magic users spoke to control and use magic. The following is a list of spells used in the Inheritance Cycle.

Atra nosu waíse vardo fra eld hórnya	May we be warded from listeners	Used to prevent someone from eavesdropping.	spoken by Brom in Gilead and Eragon countless times
Brisingr	Fire	Used to create fire. It could cause an object to catch on fire or to be surrounded by it. It is also the name of Eragon's sword, which he made in book 3.	Spoken by Brom in Eragon to start a campfire and by Eragon to create a flaming arrow and sword. He later could no longer use the spell in presence of his sword, or else the sword will be consumed in fire.
Boetk istalrí	Broad fire	Used to set fire to things.	Used by Durza (in Eragon) to ignite a quarter-mile of forest.
Brakka du vanyalí sem huildar [subject]!	Reduce the magic that holds [subject].	Spoken by Eragon, to attempt to free himself from Murtagh's magic in the final battle of Eldest. He also used it while being taught by Oromis when he paralyzed Eragon's legs.	used by Eragon twice
Deloi moi	Earth change	Used to collapse or change the Earth.	Spoken by Eragon when destroying the tunnels in the battle of Farthen Dur
Draumr kópa	Dream stare	Used to scry someone or something.	Spoken by Eragon.
Deyja	Die	One of the twelve words of death: it kills immediately.	Spoken by Eragon.
Du grind huildr	Hold the gate	Used to hold the gate. The translation is the same.	Spoken by Eragon.
Eitha	To go or leave	Typically combined in a sentence with other words to push something away.	Spoken by Eragon.
Eyddr eyreya onr	Empty your ears	Used to make someone temporarily deaf.	Spoken by Arya.
Garjzla	Light	Typically used to hurl a bolt or ball of light at someone, either killing them or rendering them unconscious.	Spoken by Durza when capturing Arya in an ambush.
Garjzla letta	Light, stop	Used to reflect light from a being's eyes so it doesn't enter the pupil, thus rendering them blind.	Spoken by Eragon and Murtagh respectively against the Lethrblaka and Bachel.
Gath sem oro un lam iet	Unite that arrow with my hand	Used (by Eragon) to retrieve an arrow.	Spoken by Eragon.
Gath un reisa du rakr	Unite and raise the mist	Used to unite and lift mist. The translation is the same.	Spoken by Eragon.
Gëuloth du knífr	Dull the knife	Used to dull a knife or sword, so that people don't accidentally kill each other while sparring.	Spoken by Eragon and Brom.
Jierda	Break/Hit	Typically used to break the bones of an opponent, or throw them against a hard surface. Eragon used it to smash a door to escape the Ra'zac.	Spoken by Eragon.
Jierda thierra kalfis!	Break their calves!	Used to break the calves of an opponent.	Spoken by Eragon.
Letta	Stop	Used to stop things. (Letta orya thorna! - Stop those arrows!)	Spoken by Eragon and Murtagh, Murtagh used this spell in the battle of the burning plains to imobilize Eragon
Malthinae	Confine	Used to bind things or hold in place	Spoken by Eragon.
Moí stenr!	Change rock	Used to change the rock.	Spoken by Eragon.
Reisa	Raise	Used in conjunction with the name of something or someone in order to raise them off the ground.	Spoken by Eragon. and Durza (in the Eragon movie).
Skölir	Shield	Typically used to shield the caster from harm, such as redirecting fire to pass harmlessly around the caster.	Spoken by Eragon and Murtagh.
Skölir nosu fra brisingr!	Shield us from fire!	Used by Eragon to divert flames away from himself and Saphira.	Spoken by Eragon.
Slytha	Sleep	Used to put a person to sleep.	Spoken by Eragon and Carn.
Stenr Reisa	Rise stone.	Used to make a stone rise.	Spoken by Eragon.
Thaefathan	Thicken	Used to create calluses on a persons hands similar to Ascûdgamln.	Used by Eragon.
Thverr stenr un atra eka hórna!	Traverse stone and let me hear!	Used to eavesdrop on a conversation through a stone wall.	Spoken by Eragon.
Thrysta	Thrust, compress	Used thrust, compress things. Typically combined in a sentence with other words to thrust something. Eragon used it to stop a man's heart while escaping from Gil'ead	Spoken by Eragon.
Thrysta vindr	Compress the air	Used to send balls of air at enemies	Spoken by Murtagh.
Vindr	Air	Used to manipulate air and wind	Spoken by Murtagh against the Draumar.
Waíse heill	Be healed	A healing spell, used to mend physical wounds but can "only mend what is on the surface"	Spoken by Eragon.
Waíse néiat	Be not	Converts matter into energy.	Spoken by Galbatorix and likely Thuviel.

Brisingr	Fire	Used by Eragon through arrows or to destroy rocks flung at him by the Shade Durza. Also used by Brom to start a fire.
Ma’mor	Used to unlock doors that are locked.	Spoken by Eragon.
Morte	Used to throw things, such as axes from the nearby walls.	Spoken by Durza.
Skulblakas ven	Used to enable the caster to see as his/her dragon sees.	Spoken by Eragon. (In Eragon, this was done automatically when a Dragon Rider joined his/her mind with his/her dragon during flight.) It was also used when Eragon tried to find out which cell Arya was in in Gil'ead.
Kvistr	Kvistr means branch.	Kvistr is spoken by Eragon to strangle a Ra'zac with a vine.
Traevam	Tree (tall bush)	Brom taught this to Eragon. Used in the forest to subdue the Ra'zac.
Reisa	Used to make objects levitate	Spoken by Durza to launch a spear at Eragon. Brom jumped in front of the javelin and was mortally wounded.
Anori Draumr abr Sundavrblaka it ator Virliger	Anori means create, Draumr means dream/illusion, Abr means of, Sundavr means shadow, Blaka means "flapper". Hence Anori Draumr abr Sundavrblaka would mean "Create an illusion of Shadow-flapper"	Spoken by Durza to create a shadowy bat-like mount for himself.
