A soul was considered to be the true being of a person. Most elves doubted their existence, but most other races had beliefs about what happened to the soul after death. Some fans believed that this had something to do with the Vault of Souls, but this was proved untrue in Inheritance.
In Brisingr it is revealed that Spirits were another race that existed in Alagaësia.
Glaedr taught Eragon and Saphira that the soul died with the body. (Although Gûntera appeared to the dwarves).
