The Madness of life is the 13th chapter of Eragon. It takes the point of view of Eragon. Spanning less than one-and-a-half pages, it is the shortest chapter in any installment of the Inheritance Cycle.
Summary[]
Eragon wakes a few hours before dawn and finds himself gripped by a terrible premonition. He gets out of bed, gets dressed, and visits Garrow's room, where he finds a group of people. Inside, Garrow lays dead, a silver amulet around his neck and a sprig of hemlock on his chest. Katrina states that she had hoped to one day call him "Father."
Eragon thinks that that is a right he does not even have. Tears flood his cheeks and he gives himself over to crashing grief. Someone leads him back to bed, where he pushes away a mental contact from his dragon, Saphira and shouts to the gods, asking them to show themselves. He becomes aware of Elain sitting next to him and she holds him until he unwillingly falls asleep.
