The World (for lack of an official name) is the planet that houses the continents of Alagaësia and Alalëa, among others. The World of the Inheritance Cycle is not The Earth that we live on[1], but is roughly the same size[2].
Terrain[]
The World is similar to Earth terrain-wise, but also has many magical areas such as The Beor Mountains and Du Weldenvarden.
Continents[]
Most of the events of the book take place in Alagaësia. There are other continents mentioned, too:
- The Eastern Reaches (east of Alagaësia)
- The Human Homeland (south-west of Alagaësia)
- Alalëa (west of Alagaësia)
The area north of Du Weldenvarden is covered with ice and snow[3]. Christopher Paolini has planned several more continents, which have yet to be revealed[4].
The wider universe[]
The planet on which they live on is round, as seen by Eragon and Saphira when they fly to Vroengard. This implies that the physics of the universe is similar to that of ours. The stars move across the night sky, as described by Angela in The Fork, the Witch and the Worm. There is a sun and a moon. There are other planets in the system, which are visible in the night sky[5].
